We are so thrilled to share our indie author editing services with you! Britt and Erica have a passion to see every self-published author succeed and thrive, even in the ever-growing, competitive publishing market. And we would love to work with YOU!
Today, we’re sharing a few tips for choosing the right freelance book editor. Not every editor is the right fit for every book, and that’s ok! Personalities do matter, and that’s why it’s a great idea to have a chat or two with your prospective editors to make sure you both mesh well together.
Here are a few key elements to look out for when booking an editor:
- Does your editor have experience with your genre?
- Have you obtained a sample edit so that you can see your editor’s feedback style? Are comments and suggestions presented in a way that is clear and helpful to you?
- Does your editor have an educational background or work experience that lends professionalism to their work, such as an English degree or field experience?
- Is your editor recommended by people in your writing circle?
- During conversations, do you find yourself vibing well together?
- Does your editor present him/herself professionally? Speak professionally during conversations or in emails?
- Do you share a similar worldview? Will your values match as you go about finalizing your book together?
- Does your editor gatekeep information? Or take the time to explain grammar rules and/or why a change is suggested? (This can be hard to gauge before you begin working together, but a strong editor will take opportunities to pass on valuable knowledge that can help make you a stronger writer on future projects.)
- Is it clear that the editor you are interviewing not only has the technical skills needed, but also has a passion for your book?
- Are they prompt with email and/or DM responses?
Choosing an editor can feel a little daunting. The perfect editor is found at the junction where professional skills meet passion for your project. An editor who has the most experience in the world yet doesn’t GET you or your book may not be the right fit for you.

While it is tempting, we don’t recommend choosing an editor based off the lowest price for services. Editing is a task that takes many hours and finely tuned mental skills. We recommend choosing an editor whose prices fit within industry guidelines for the best results. If necessary, talk to your editor about payment plans. Don’t hesitate to find a creative way to work together.
